ROSTER OF OFFICERS AND ENLISTED MEN FROM WILLIAMSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, WHO TOOK PART IN THE MEXICAN, CIVIL AND SPANISH-AMERICAN WARS
(1900, LEADER PRINTING CO.)
To the Memory of those
who Wore the Blue in Defence
of Our Country
and to
those who are now under fire
this little book is
Affectionately Dedicated.
Military Record of Williamson County
Williamson county was first called upon to furnish soldiers
for the Mexican war and in short time had to the field her quota.
Next came the call in 1861, when President Lincoln called for
volunteers to serve in the civil war. From 1861 to 1865 every call
was responded to, and records show that Williamson county
furnished more than her quota of volunteers.
After there was no longer need of soldiers for the war of the
sixties, peace prevailed until 1898, when the Spanish-American
war was declared. For this conflict a number of volunteers re-
ponded, but owing to the fact that few were needed, several were
not allowed to go. In addition to those received, one company of
the Eleventh regiment, John W. Peebles, captain; B. F. Copeland,
first lieutenant, and Loren Fowler, second lieutenant, was organ-
ized and reported for duty.
Following this came the Philippine war, in which quite a num-
ber of Williamson county soldiers served. These, however, were
not recruited as others were- - -credited to the county- - -therefore
we have no record at hand giving their service and have only in-
formation concerning a part of them, finding it difficult to furnish
complete list of the volunteers in the islands. Since completing
the book we have been given the names of Frank Chamness, Chas.
Cox and Ed Miller, who were numbered with those who went from
this country, the former in the islands, the latter in the Span-
ish-American war.
We have found it impossible to give an absolutely correct
record of all those mentioned, because the records published are
not clear in every aspect; but this may be of service in assisting
the Adjutant General in correcting errors in his next report and fur-
nish a more correct list in the future, should those interested see
fit to supply the dates and show service rendered.
In compliance with a resolution adopted by the Williamson
County Soldiers' and Sailors' Association in 1898, this little book
is published, and can be had by addressing the publishers.
